Everyone has that one friend who throws the most amazing parties. Whether it’s an adult’s wizarding party with potion-themed drinks or a Halloween party that manages to make pumpkin carving into an activity that even people who hate pumpkins can enjoy, some people seem to have a natural talent for hosting.
Even when you catch them off-guard with minimal notice, they manage to make you feel welcome and make the gathering a success. How do they do it? Odds are it’s through a combination of the following tricks.
Food is absolutely essential to a successful gathering. Wherever there are people gathering, there really should be something for them to eat. A clever host will always keep something on hand to serve, or have a recipe that doesn’t take long to prepare but makes a tasty treat for everyone to enjoy. Make sure to take allergies, intolerances, and diet into consideration when you’re putting together a snack tray for your guests. No one dish can never everyone happy, so it never hurts to make sure there’s a variety of choices available.
Technically, eating is itself an activity, and it can carry you a long way, but it also pays to have something on hand for your guests to do. If you’re throwing a party and have time to plan, you can set up activities that match the theme or the group, but if you don’t have that luxury, you might want to have something on hand. An exciting strategy game like Rise of Tribes would fit the bill, but make sure that it’s a game everyone knows, or at least a game they can learn quickly. Remember that lively conversation can absolutely count as an activity, especially if you have a space that makes conversation easy.
Some of your guests might not be be interested in alcohol, but that shouldn’t stop you from offering them a fun drink. Having good alcohol readily available can make the party go much smoother. A well stocked beer fridge, wine rack, or bar cart can work wonders with otherwise unwilling party guests.
Play to your strengths: there’s no need to be an expert mixologist if you’re more of a wine drinker and there’s no need to be an expert sommelier if you’re more of a beer drinker. The key is to have something distinctive and enjoyable, something that will make the party successful and memorable.
Play to Your Strengths
The final and most important key to throwing a good party every time is to play to your strengths. Not everyone can be good at everything, after all, so focus on the things that you enjoy and are good at. If you’re not much a of a fan of alcohol, then focus on serving delicious snacks, and if you’re not much of a fan of board games, maybe consider focusing instead on creating a nice place to have a conversation. Remember, anyone can throw a nice party, with just a little bit of preparation and a little bit of attention.
