Many associate Halloween with kids dressing up in costumes and going door to door to collect candy. But with the rise in childhood obesity and everyone’s overall poor eating habits, many people are now concerned about the amount of sugar that gets consumed on Halloween night and thereafter. There is also the fear of food poisoning, inserted razor blades and other potential hazards, so it is no wonder that many households are looking for candy alternatives to hand out to trick-or-treaters.

Whatever the reason is behind your choice of treats, you can still choose items for your trick or treaters that are still fun. Here are some candy alternative ideas of things that you can give out to trick-or-treaters on Halloween instead.

1. Pencils, Pens and/or Erasers

Since most of the trick-or-treaters that come to your door are school-age variety, pens, pencils and erasers can be a fun gift. Plus you can often find Halloween themed pencils, pens and erasers easily. Look for fun Halloween designs with pumpkins, bats or black cats. Halloween shaped erasers can also be fun to hand out. You just want to be careful not to give erasers to little kids where they may be a choking hazard.

Also, some stores and restaurants (i.e. McDonald’s and Wendy’s) often sell coupon books for a free item (i.e. a free ice cream cream cone) to hand out to trick-or-treaters. This allows the parents to save the Halloween treat for another time.

4. Party Favors

Party supply stores will often have a large stock of Halloween party favors available in October. These Halloween party favors include things like plastic spider rings, glow sticks, rubber bats and fake teeth which are all fun alternatives to candy to hand out. 6. Single Serving Packages

If you still want to do an edible food item, many stores sell non-sugary snacks in single serving packages. For instance, many healthy conscious companies are joining in on the 100-calorie pack trend, so you can buy a variety of edible snacks that are still healthy. Examples of these items are fruit snacks, juice boxes and mini bags of pretzels. It is advisable to stay away from foods that include nuts because of so many peanut allergies that some of trick-or-treaters might have.
