The Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, originating from Mexico but slowly spreading to other countries via Mexican communities. Celebrations include cleaning and decorating graves with altars. What makes the Day of the Dead such a unique celebration is that it replaces the feeling of mourning with joy.

All participants in the celebration give the atmosphere this joyous feel by telling funny stories from the lives of the deceased. In addition, the colorful masks and vibrant outfits also add a cheerful note to the festival.

La Calavera Catrina: The Skeleton Lady

La Catrina or La Calavera Catrina is one of the most identifiable symbols of the Día de Los Muertos holiday. First appearing in a sketch of caricatures with skulls for faces by Mexican illustrator Jose Guadalupe Posada, La Calavera Catrina refers to a well-dressed woman who soon became the face of the Day of the Dead celebration.

The look consists of decorated sugar skulls, face painting, and elegant dresses. The dresses can be floral and flowy in vibrant colors (yellow, pink, orange) and long. You can also adorn a big floppy hat or opt for a headband of flowers that you can arrange to best suit your personality.

Other accessories that will make your outfit perfect are skeleton hand gloves and a scarf or shawl, while a lace scarf may add that little bit of elegance and also help keep you warm.

Similar to La Calavera Catrina, another popular Day of the Dead costume is that of the skeleton bride. A Day of the Dead bride costume includes a long, elegant dress in white, red, or even black, a veil, a bouquet, and a skeleton face (the most important part of the outfit).

Costumes for Men

Based on El Catrin, the male counterpart to La Catrina. Men wear suits or tuxes, spicing it up in traditional Mexican style.Adding various accessories will turn your simple suit into a Day of the Dead costume. You can start with a tie, a bandana, a tuxedo bowtie, or a bolo tie. To complete the outfit, add a hat. You can opt for either a sombrero or a top hat, depending on what look you are going for.

In true Day of the Dead fashion, skeleton hand gloves will go great with the skeleton man look. And, of course, no Day of the Dead costume is complete without the face skeleton makeup.
