‘Tis the season for parties. Moods are high and well wishes are plentiful, making it the perfect time to host a winter party.
But what if you’re new at this party planning thing? Take it from a former party planner, no one will remember how cold it is outside if the celebration inside is warm and inviting. Follow along for four winter party tips.
Embrace the Season
Baby, it’s cold outside, so go with it! If you’re in a climate that provides snow, why not have an ice sculpture or snow angel contest? Ice luges for drinks are always fun, and snowmen are great time wasters and can be incredibly entertaining to watch being built. If you are in a warmer climate, you can still have winter-themed activities, like throwing “snowballs” (Styrofoam balls), making snow cones, and even relaxing around a warm campfire!
Create a Cozy Atmosphere
People love parties where there is plenty of comfy seating and a great place to sit and catch up with friends. In some cases, they probably haven’t seen each other for quite some time and just want to chat for a while about the family. Making sure the temperature is comfortable will help.
Before the party, it’s a good idea to have your HVAC system serviced and make any necessary installations or repairs. It might also help to remember that a house full of people can heat up quickly, so the thermostat may not need to be up as high as if it were just your family.
The Right Menu Goes a Long Way
Having a plan is so important when choosing what to serve at your party. Keep in mind the amount of time you will really need to cook your dishes and how they will taste together. It’s fun to try new recipes, but don’t underestimate the tried and true basics, like a warm dip. When planning, figure out what can be made ahead and reheated, and what needs to be made on the day, and schedule accordingly.
Ace Your Space
Take stock of the space you will be throwing the party. If it’s in your home, chances are you’ll need to do some last minute cleaning and errand running. Make sure there is extra toilet paper in the bathrooms within reaching distance, to put it delicately. It’s also a good idea to log out and put your electronics away if you can. And, unless you clean between the couch cushions on a regular basis, you might want to check things out in that area too. I never know what my dog or daughter has stuffed down there, and I don’t want my guests finding old treats or fruit snacks.
Winter is a great time to party, and it’s easily done when you plan accordingly. Enjoy yourself too, because the guests care more about seeing you and catching up than they will about how perfect your party is. (But it will be perfect.)
